Erekat Experiencing Difficulties Due to Covid-19 Symptoms

The Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the PLO and the Chief Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat, has been diagnosed with the Covid-19 virus. On Thursday evening, the 65- year-old politician’s Twitter account announced it to the public.

An individual wrote on the behalf of Erekat on twitter, stating that the politician had contracted the virus. The tweet also wished him well and apologized to the public for canceling all these appointments until the Chief Palestinian negotiator recovers.

On Friday, Erekat informed via his Twitter account that he was having a difficult time with Covid-19 symptoms. He said that this was because of a lung transplantation and his lack of immunity. Back in 2012, Erekat had had a mild heart attack. Moreover, he had been operated on in 2017 for a lung transplant after suffering from pulmonary fibrosis for years. Both these things have put the 65-year-old politician in a high-risk category for those testing positive for the disease.

Erekat has been one of the main architects of the Oslo peace accords between the PLO and Israel. He has held the position of the Chief Investigator for Palestine since the year 1995. He is not only the senior-most figure in the PLO, but also has an important role to play in Palestinian politics.

The Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the PLO had just met with Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian Authority President, around four days ago. This was due to a meeting held of the PLO Executive Committee. Consequently, everyone who attended the meeting was tested for the disease. However, their results turned out to be negative.

Many took to Twitter to wish a speedy recovery to the politician, as he tries to battle the coronavirus and its symptoms.
